The Heirloom Yard – Community Conversations 2023

The Heirloom Yard

The Heirloom Yard

I love to feature local businesses and this week I had the pleasure of meeting with Christie, owner of the Heirloom Yard.

The Heirloom Yard is a relatively new business in our community but has already become a local treasure.  Christie opened up on 2020 with a dream of a garden right smack in the middle of Fernandina Beach located on Amelia Island Florida.  What started as a empty parcel has been reimagined to a garden filled with different textures, colors and scents.  Something beautiful from something baren is a pretty special talent.

Getting to know Christie and The Heirloom Yard

You may have noticed this magical looking garden on 10th Street.  It sits behind a picket fence with a adorable “garage” towards the back of the property.  I have a pretty vivid imagination so I can picture a English garden setting with of course fairies flying from flower to flower!

Actually though Christie created The Heirloom Yard as a working garden it is different because she plants flowers, greens and a few plants specifically designed to keep those pesky bugs off the flowers as the Florida seasons change.  The garden can include flowers such as snapdragons and ranunculus in the cooler months and things like dahlias and zinnias for the summer months.

The flower beds are turned over several times a year with flora that works best for our seasons and humidity.  She explained some of her inside tricks to get those beautiful flowers at the perfect time throughout the year.

I wasn’t surprised to learn that Christie has been overseeing businesses for most of her adult life and the move to Fernandina Beach allowed her to try something new and it has blossomed into a  very special place.  Not only can you get cut flowers but she also provides custom floral arrangements for weddings / special events (on a limited basis)

I will say the thing I feel she is most known for right now are her workshops.  These small intimate workshops are held in that magical building (that isn’t a garage at all) in the back of the garden.  She has partnered with other local businesses to create unique one of a kind workshops that our community loves.
