Fernandina Beach History
Amelia National Golf and Country Club started selling it’s first homesites in 2005. The community was designed around it’s golf course and other community amenities. ICI Homes is the primary builder inside the development. You will also find homes sites being built by River Side Homes.
Fernandina Beach was settled in 1865 and was named after King Ferdinand VII of Spain. Prior to European settlement the island was called Napoyca and the Timucan Native Americans occupied the area. This group of Native Americans lived in the area for 1,000 years and were the largest indigenous group in the area and consisted of 35 chiefdoms.
One of the most interesting things about Amelia Island is that it has been held by 8 different flags and the only spot in the United States to hold that title. The flags in order are:
France Flag, Spain Flag, England Flag, Spain Flag, Patriot Flag, Green Cross of Florida Flag, Mexican Rebel Flag, Confederate Flag and finally the United States Flag.
